GAME SUMMARIES
Game 1: Burnaby 8 (OT), Six Nations 7
It took the Arrows over half a period to get their game in gear, but that they did. Down 2 - 0 by the twelve minute mark of the first period, the OLA Champion Six Nations squad scored on the Power Play twice and led 3 - 2 after the first period of Minto Cup 2004 at Copeland.

Not to be outdone the BC Champion Burnaby Lakers came out strong in the second period outshooting the Arrows 19 - 10 and outscoring them 3 -1 to lead 5 - 4 after two periods of play.

The third period had the Lakers leading 7 - 6 with less than a minute remaining. After an Arrows time out they setup in front of the Lakers net and Matt Myke fired a side arm top shelf to tie the game with 14 seconds left in the third period.

In sudden death overtime Arrows netminder made 3 fantastic saves on Matt Brown who was all alone in front of the net.

Nenad Gajic scores overtime winner
But at the four minute mark, Captain Nenad Gajic picked up a loose ball in the Arrows end and beat two defenders before snapping the winner home short side, top corner as the Lakers went 1 - 0 in the round robin portion of Minto Cup 2004.

Game 2: Victoria 14, Edmonton 5
Special report from Rockslax.com
The Victoria Junior Shamrocks took the first step along the road to the Minto Cup as they hosted the Edmonton Miners Thursday night at Archie Browning in Esquimalt. The host team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and rode the hot goaltending of Cole Murray to a 14-5 victory in front of about 400 fans.

Jon Marrese was Murray’s counterpart in the Miners net to start the game and he was tested early by Victoria’s shooters. After Cayle Ratcliff scored the first goal for the Shamrocks, they added three more in a space of 42 seconds as the other Intermediate call-ups Rhys Duch and Kyle Morwick scored followed by Scott Ranger at 6:46. The Shamrocks were having a lot of success on face-offs and finding the top corner on the Miner goaltender. Some undisciplined play on the part of the host team found them at a 5-3 disadvantage but Murray weathered the storm during that power play and did not allow a goal. Matt Holland scored Victoria’s fifth goal before Edmonton finally got on the board with a power play marker by Cole Howell at 18:00. Shots on goal favoured Victoria 13-11 in the period and they led on the scoreboard 5-1.

The second period saw Edmonton pick up the pace a bit, as each team scored 3 goals. Curtis Morwick scored the first of three on the night just 3:56 into the middle frame but Edmonton’s Kris Hartzell replied just 40 seconds later. Lee Diercks found himself in all alone at 5:06 and restored the 5-goal Victoria lead but Edmonton got a pair from Andy Kent and looked like they might make a game of it. Big Buck Stobart put an end to that as he plowed into the offensive zone and beat Marrese to give the Shamrocks an 8-4 lead heading into the dressing room after 40 minutes.

In the final period it was all Victoria as they outscored the Miners 6-1, despite running into penalty trouble early as they took two bench minors for too many men and had another double minor situation called to give Edmonton a 5-on-3 advantage. Again they were unable to capitalize. Referees Crosato and Cardiff called four consecutive penalties on the Shamrocks, then reversed the trend and called four straight on the Miners. Unfortunately for the visitors, Victoria was able to capitalize on two of their power play opportunities.

The victorious Shamrocks got a hat trick from Curtis Morwick while Scott Ranger contributed 2 goals and 3 assists for a 5-point outing. Kyle Morwick and Shane Chalker also chipped in 2 goals, Chalker’s both coming on breakaways in the third period. Rhys Duch, Cayle Ratcliff, Matt Holland, Lee Diercks, and Buck Stobart added singles. Goaltender Cole Murray was named MVP of the game.

For the Miners it was Andy Kent and Kris Hartzell each with a pair while Cole Howell added the other Edmonton marker. The Edmonton played a very physical game but could not match up to the experience on the Shamrocks.

Game 4: Six Nations 12, Victoria 7
Special report from Rockslax.com
huckster writes "The Victoria Junior Shamrocks hosted the Six Nations Arrows in the second game for each team in this year’s Minto Cup Saturday afternoon. The Arrows lost their first match to the Burnaby Lakers while the ‘Rocks defeated Edmonton in their opener. The Ontario representatives rattled off a 12-7 victory as both teams now go to 1-1 in the tournament.

The Six Nations team swarmed the Victoria net early as they netted three goals by the 2:35 mark, chasing Shamrock goaltender Aaron Bold from the net. Cole Murray came in and was outstanding through the remainder of the first period. The advantage the Arrows seemed to have early was their offensive speed and transition game while the Shamrocks were struggling at both ends of the floor. Scott Ranger finally got the home team on the board at 8:17 but Six Nations jumped into a 4-1 lead at 12:17. Victoria added three more to tie things up at 4-4 heading into the dressing room after 20 minutes.

Six Nations continued their domination in the second period as they beat the Shamrocks to loose balls and their aggressive physical play forced numerous turnovers. Several times Arrows shooters were left unmolested in front of the Shamrock goal as defenders seemed to miss their assignments. The Ontario representatives outscored Victoria 4-1 in the second period to hold an 8-5 lead after two periods.

The Arrows scored two goals 9 seconds apart to start the third and the Shamrocks seemed to lose heart. Cole Murray left the Victoria goal as Aaron Bold returned for the remainder of the game. The difference tonight was the speed and transition of the Six Nations team as they simply beat the defenders to the net time after time. Defensively they threw a blanket over Victoria’s scoring threats and they were unable to create the opportunities they needed. When Shamrock shooters were able to hit the net, big Grant Crawley was there to make the saves.

Six Nations got two goals from Craig Point, Matt Myke and Stew Monture while Mitch Nanticoke, Sid Smith, Rayce Vyse, Murray Porter, Eli Hill and Kent Squire-Hill added singles.

Scott Ranger led the Shamrocks with a pair of goals and an assist. Brad Dougan, Shane Chalker, Lee Diercks, Curtis Morwick and Matt Holland were the other Victoria scorers.

All four teams in the tournament return to action on Sunday as the Burnaby Lakers host the Shamrocks while the Six Nations Arrows will face off against the Edmonton Miners. Burnaby currently leads the tournament with a 2-0 record while Edmonton is winless. Both games take place at Burnaby's Copeland at 4:00 and 8:00 respectively.

Game 5: Burnaby 8, Victoria 5
Special report from Rockslax.com
huckster writes "The Burnaby Junior Lakers move to the Minto Cup final as they defeated the Victoria Shamrocks 8-5 on Sunday afternoon to finish the round-robin portion of the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Lakers and Shamrocks played each other tough for three full periods once again, as they have done many times this year, Victoria falling just a little short once again. Victoria's chances for a rematch hinge on the results of the second game of Sunday's double-header.

Starting in goal for the Lakers was Ron Schibild and for the Shamrocks Cole Murray. The first period ended in a 2-2 tie as the Lakers scored first, Matt Brown beating Murray unassisted at 5:24. The Shamrocks came back with two in a row as first Kyle Morwick scored at 8:31 and then Wes MacFarlane found the net at 10:35. Craig Conn with the first of 4 goals in the game tied things at 10:52 and the rest of the period belonged to the goaltenders. Shots on goal favoured the Lakers, 16-13.

The second period featured a continuous parade of players from both teams to the penalty box as only 3 goals were scored, all by the Lakers. The Shamrocks controlled the first half of the period however they had no success in beating Schibild. After Garrett Billings scored at 12:03, Ilijac Gajic and Conn notched power play goals to give the Lakers a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes. Burnaby held a wide advantage in shots on goal, 21-13, in he middle frame.

Mark Paniccia put the Lakers up 6-2 only 3:56 into the final period when he knocked the ball into the net with a baseball-like swing. Jamie Plunkett replied for Victoria when the ball was dislodged from his stick as he was checked into the Burnaby crease and Schibild lost sight of it. After Conn scored his hat-trick marker, Jeff Pringle and Luke Hinton on a long out-let pass from Murray got the ‘Rocks back to 7-5 at 11:57. Conn iced the contest at 19:23 as he scored into an empty net with Murray out for an extra attacker.

Craig Conn led all scorers with 4 goals for the Lakers. Matt Brown, Ilijac Gajic, Mark Paniccia and Garrett Billings were the other Burnaby scorers. Craig Conn was the Lakers player of the game with Ilijac Gajic being named game MVP.

For the Shamrocks, Wes MacFarlane, Kyle Morwick, Jamie Plunkett, Jeff Pringle and Luke Hinton were the goal scorers. Goaltender Cole Murray was Victoria’s player of the game.

The Lakers now have a bye and Victoria’s fate depends on the outcome of game two of the Sunday double-header. Should the Six Nations Arrows defeat the Edmonton Miners the Arrows and Shamrocks will have a one-game playoff to determine who faces Burnaby in the two-of-three series. Should the Miners be victorious, all 3 remaining teams will be tied at 1-2 and some type of tie-breaking formula will determine the two teams advancing to the one-game playoff.

Game 6: Six Nations 12, Edmonton 2

Special report from Rockslax.com
scribbler writes "Alberta is hosting the 2005 Minto Cup and will have to open that event without a Minto Cup win to their credit. The Six Nations Arrows outscored the Edmonton Miners in each period for a decisive win in the last game of this years Minto Cup round-robin tournament. The victory gives the Arrows 2nd place and a slot in Tuesday night’s one-game semi-final against the Victoria Shamrocks.

The first two goals of the game came from Arrows’ sticks: at 14:12, Craig Point took a pass from Nathan Gilchrist, and; Stew Monture scored his first, from Mitch Nanticoke at 17:36. Jamie Shewchuk tallied for the Miners at 18:20, assisted by Drew Howell. The first period ended with the Arrows holding a one goal l goal lead, 2 to 1. Shots on goal also favoured Six Nations, 18 to 13. The only penalty was assessed to the Miners.

In the second period the Arrows scored three goals, and held the Miners off the scoresheet. Arrows’ goals were from: Eli Hill at 8:40, with Nanticoke and Monture getting the helpers; Isaiah Kicknosway at 9:23, unassisted, and; Monture with his second of the night on a power play at 15:21, assisted by Point and Brett Bucktooth. The score was now 5 to 1. Shots in the period for Six Nations were 23 for a game total of 41, and for the Edmonton 11 for a game total of 24. Again, only a single penalty was called, and again to the Miners.

In the third period the Arrows demonstrated their potent offense, scoring seven goals: Monture with his hat-trick at 2:42 from Point; Huey Johnson at 5:38, assisted by Matt Myke and Kent Squire-Hill; Nanticoke from Point and goalie Ben VanEvery at 12:01; Sid Smith from Scott Ditzell and Brett Bucktooth at 13:27; Gilchrist assisted by Myke at 13:56; Hill from Nanticoke at 14:41, and; Nanticoke from Myke and Monture at 18:23. Edmonton salvaged some pride with a goal from Greg Whitenect at 17:28, with help from Kris Hartzell.

The game ended with a decisive 12 to 2 victory for the Six Nations Arrows. Only two penalties were called in the final frame, both to the Arrows. Shots on goal in the third period were 22 for Six Nations for a final game total of 63, to 17 for the Miners for a final game total of 41.

The team player of the game for Six Nations was Kent Squire-Hill. For Edmonton it was goalie Jon Marrese. The game MVP was Stew Monture of the Six Nations Arrows.

In spite of the lopsided final score, this game was very entertaining. Quickly played, fast transition both ways and spirited play by both teams. The Miners’ displayed great discipline and heart. Alberta lacrosse can only improve with high level competition. The noticeable deficit I saw was in shooting skills, particularly in shot selection. Only time and competition will raise those skills in Alberta lacrosse. I expect to see that improvement in the 2005 Minto Cup competition in Alberta.

The next Minto Cup game is the semi-final between the Six Nations Arrows and the Victoria Shamrocks. Game time is Tuesday night at 8 PM, at Queen’s Park in New Westminster.

Game 7: Victoria 10 (OT), Six Nations 9

Special report from Rockslax.com
huckster writes "The Junior Shamrocks, by virtue of an overtime win over the Ontario representative Six Nations Arrows, have another date with the Burnaby Lakers. George Westwood scored at 4:55 of overtime to give the ‘Rocks a 10-9 victory and secure a place in the Minto Cup finals.

The teams were close all through the game with only one period not ending in a tie as the first period ended with the Arrows up 3-2. The Shamrocks scored first and took a 2-0 lead with goals by Buck Stobart and Rhys Duch on a power play at 4:42 and 5:34 respectively. Less than a minute later Mitch Nanticoke got the Arrows on the board and Kent Squire-Hill added a pair before the period was over.

Victoria started the second period with a 5-3 man advantage and Jeff Pringle scored at the 0:17 mark to tie things up. Duch, with his second gave the Shamrocks the lead but Rayce Vyse, with the first of 3 in the game got the Arrows even again a short while later. Cayle Ratcliff, assisted by the Morwick brothers, restored the Victoria lead at 11:45. Three goals within a span of 2:53, two by Vyse and the other by Victoria’s Jamie Plunkett had the score tied at 6-6 after 40 minutes.

Both teams played at a high intensity level throughout and the game was physical. Goaltenders at both ends got help from the goalposts. In the third period the teams exchanged power play goals as first Wes MacFarlane for the Shamrocks and then Craig Point for the Arrows scored. The Shamrocks’ Stobart, like a run-away train, picked up speed and scored unassisted at 8:04 to take the lead but Murray Porter replied at 13:08 and the third period ended in an 8-8 tie.

Following a 10-minute intermission the teams returned to the floor for 10 minutes of straight overtime. Brett Bucktooth scored from a bad angle to put Six Arrows ahead for the last time in the contest but Duch with his third marker of the game tied it at 1:40. Duch was then instrumental in the winning goal as he picked off a pass and fed it to George Westwood who made no mistake in picking the top corner. In the dying seconds, Cole Murray in the Victoria net made some great saves, including one after he had lost his stick, to preserve the victory.

Rhys Duch led the Shamrocks with 3 goals and an assist. Buck Stobart added a pair of goals while Cayle Ratcliff, Jeff Pringle, Jamie Plunkett, Wes MacFarlane and George Westwood added singles. Cole Murray came up with an outstanding performance in goal for the winners.

For the Six Nations Arrows Rayce Vyse had a hat-trick while Kent Squire-Hill added a pair. Other goals came from Mitch Nanticoke, Craig Point , Brett Bucktooth and Murray Porter. Bucktooth also added 4 assists in a losing cause. Ben VanEvery and Grant Crawley split the time in the Arrows net.

This sets the stage for the best 2-of-3 final series between the Victoria Shamrocks and the Burnaby Lakers. Games 1 and 2 take place September 2 and 3 at Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster. Game 3 if necessary will be played on September 4.

Game Report:
huckster writes "The Victoria Junior Shamrocks and the Burnaby Junior Lakers played the first of a best-two-of-three final along the road to the Minto Cup Thursday night at Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster. In a tight defensive battle, the Lakers drew first blood coming away with a 6-3 victory.

Victoria seems snake bit when it comes to Burnaby as they have now lost 8 straight games to the Lakers this season, including playoffs despite being close in most of the contests.

Ron Schibild and Cole Murray were the starting goaltenders in the game. The pace was quick early as both goaltenders played well, the first goal not coming until the 10:15 mark of the opening frame as Craig Conn scored to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Only 1:09 later, Shamrock sniper Scott Ranger tied the score on the power play. Burnaby’s Garrett Billings scored an unassisted goal on a Laker power play to restore the 1-goal lead and that score stood up to the end of the period. Late in the first period, Victoria’s Shane Chalker was assessed a 5-minute major for butt ending and a game misconduct, a severe blow to the Shamrocks.

The Lakers started the second still on the power play as a result of the Chalker major penalty but the Shamrocks came up with an excellent penalty kill and Murray had some big saves. Right after the penalty expiration, however, a bad change by the Victoria bench saw the Lakers with a two-man advantage on the floor and Conn made no mistake, scoring his second of the game. That goal came at 4:03 but was followed only 22 seconds later by Scott Ranger’s second of the game as he beat Schibild through the 5-hole. Victoria’s Wes MacFarlane got the Shamrocks even with a hard shot at 8:36. Once again, however, Burnaby took the lead when Billings scored his second of the game and the Lakers went to the dressing room after 40 minutes leading 4-3.

The third period saw only two goals scored, both unassisted. Nenad Gajic scored at 13:38 and then John Panichelli into the empty net iced the victory. It was an intense battle all the way through and game 2 promises to be just as exciting.

Cole Murray was named Victoria’s star of the game. Scott Ranger led the Shamrocks offensively with a pair of goals. Wes MacFarlane scored the other Victoria marker and Drew Meakes added a pair of assists.

Craig Conn and Garret Billings each scored a pair for the victorious Lakers while John Panichelli and Nenad Gajic had singles. Game 2 is scheduled for Queen’s Park Friday at 8:00 pm with game 3 if necessary at the same venue Saturday, September 4 at 8:00.

Game 2 - Minto Cup Final: Burnaby 13, Victoria 53

Burnaby wins the 2004 Minto Cup

huckster writes "The Junior Lakers are once again the winners of the Minto Cup, exhibiting their dominance over the Victoria Shamrocks. The second game was not even close as the Lakers outshot the ‘Rocks 61-32 to come away with a 13-5 victory and the 2-game sweep.

Starting goaltenders were Cole Murray for the Shamrocks and Ron Schibild for the Lakers. The first period was close as Victoria got on the board first when Cayle Ratcliff beat Schibild with a clean bounce shot on the first Shamrock shot in the period. Murray was outstanding early, producing some excellent saves to keep his team in the lead until the 10:44 mark when Garrett Billings scored to tie the contest. Rhys Duch restored the Victoria lead at 13:11 as he faked a couple of times, showed a lot of patience for such a young player and then beat Schibild. Craig Conn, however, scored at 14:24 and Nenad Gajic added another goal at 15:42 to put the Lakers ahead 3-2. There were several penalties late in the period but no more scoring, as Burnaby outshot Victoria 19-10 in the first 20 minutes.

In the second period, the rout began as the Lakers outscored their rivals by a margin of 7-2. Ilijac Gajic scored only 11 seconds in but Curtis Morwick replied for the Shamrocks at 0:44. Burnaby then ran off a string of 6 straight goals, including two on power plays and one short-handed as the Victoria end of the rink turned into a shooting gallery for Burnaby snipers. Murray’s heroics were not enough to stem the tide and Victoria was unable to get anything going offensively. Jeff Pringle finally added the fourth Shamrock goal at 18:25 as the period ended with the Lakers holding a 10-4 lead.

Buck Stobart scored at 2:23 for Victoria but 3 more Burnaby shots found the back of the net to finish the scoring by the 10:54 mark and it was a matter of running off the remaining time on the clock. Goaltender Cole Murray was nothing short of spectacular but it was not enough and penalties also hurt the Shamrocks.

Ilijac Gajic led the Lakers with a hat trick and 3 assists. Garrett Billings also had 3 goals while Matt Brown and Nenad Gajic each added a pair. Craig Conn, Brad Richardson and Cory Melville also scored for Burnaby.

For the Shamrocks it was Buck Stobart, Jeff Pringle, Rhys Duch, Cayle Ratcliff and Curtis Morwick finding the back of the net. Cole Murray stopped 48 of 61 shots but for the 9th time in the 2004 season the ‘Rocks were unable to solve the mystique of the Lakers. It was a disappointing finish for the Shamrocks but a well deserved win by the Lakers.
